Lithophanes ("Vision In Stone") - Distinctive Home Lighting Artworks.
Handcrafted in Engraved Translucent Bisque Porcelain.

A unique process was developed to create these lovely lamps.
First, a thin layer of opaque black porcelain is cast over a translucent white porcelain.
Next, the artist carefully etches the black porcelain away in an intricate pattern,
revealing the milky white porcelain underneath.
Then, the piece is fired in a kiln at over 2500 degrees, which gives the porcelain great strength,
and the white porcelain its lovely translucency.

In some areas of the design, the etching pierces through both layers of porcelain,
allowing the light to cast delicate patterns around the room when lit.
